The EU’s AI Dilemma:Striking a Balance Between Innovation and Regulation.

As you can imagine I have been keeping a close eye on the European Union’s efforts to create legislation for artificial intelligence (AI), and recently, had the chance to catch up with some of my former colleagues who now work in the European Parliament to understand just what is going on this evening.

The EU is currently working on a game-changing AI Act, but it’s proving to be quite a challenge to get everyone on the same page. Let’s dive in and explore what’s at stake and how the EU might find that sweet spot between encouraging innovation and ensuring responsible AI usage. European lawmakers had hoped to pass the AI Act before the year ends.

Talks between EU member states are set to started earlier this afternoon and could go well into the night as representatives struggle to resolve their differences and clear a path to form the basis for further negotiations.

At the time of going to pixel the negotiations between EU member states are ongoing.

Points of contention remain on whether the law should govern how foundational models are developed in machine learning and whether AI can be used for live biometrics monitoring such as facial recognition. Countries want an exemption so law enforcement can use it to find missing children or…
