It’s a big day for ethical AI in Europe are you ready ?
For me today is a really exciting day in the journey for ethical AI I have been watching the plenary session this morning. The European Unions far-reaching regulations passed with the support of 523 lawmakers in the European Parliament in Strasbourg (one of the two Parliaments of the EU), France, with 46 voting against. So what happens next ?
My understanding of the current timelines
So what does the act mean to HR Professionals ?
When it comes to enforcement, each EU country will set up their own AI watchdog, where citizens can file a complaint if they think they’ve been the victim of a violation of the rules. Meanwhile, Brussels will create an AI Office tasked with enforcing and supervising the law for general purpose AI systems.
Violations of the AI Act could draw fines of up to 35 million euros ($38 million), or 7% of a company’s global revenue.
AI systems that affect employment decisions will fall into the “high-risk” category. Since, according to the AI Act, they “appreciably impact future career prospects and livelihoods” of people. For this reason, HR will need to make sure that their organisations comply with the requirements of the AI Act when thinking of developing or deploying AI.
So how do you start getting ready ?
Understand where your team may have already deployed AI in your HCM Landscape. I have seen a number of clients turn on or opt into AI without being fully aware of its implications.
In IBM we know you need the combination of people, process, tools to put ethics at the heart of your AI strategy.
Take a read of the Ethics by Design Playbook from IBM is a structured framework that is intended to fully integrate tech ethics considerations in the technology lifecycle and development pipeline, including but not limited to artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
This playbook provides guidance on how to take reasonable steps to create trustworthy AI models that consider the pillars of trustworthy AI: fairness, transparency, explainability, robustness, and privacy.
I’d also highly recommend reading the book “The Algorithm” by Hilke Schellmann for me it’s a insightful read and gives you a great perspective from an outsiders perspective.
Educate your teams the pace of change in this area is huge. I know many of our clients are benefiting from our team sharing the IBM story.
Let technology help you products like Watson X.Goverance to break open the black box. It was built to direct, manage and monitor the artificial intelligence (AI) activities of your organization
It’s a great day for all those with a passion to build a future based on trustworthy AI now the hard work begins. If you would like to chat about how IBM can help you get ready drop me a message.
