Meta to Proceed with Using UK Facebook and Instagram Posts to Train AI Amid Privacy Concerns.
The Guardian reported that Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta is moving forward with its plan to leverage millions of UK Facebook and Instagram posts to train its AI technology, despite concerns from privacy advocates and regulatory bodies. The decision to proceed comes after a similar proposal was halted in June, following warnings from the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) about the need to protect user privacy during the development of generative AI.
Meta has maintained that it has engaged constructively with the ICO and made amendments to its initial plan. Key changes include giving users clearer options to opt-out of having their posts used for AI training. Nevertheless, the ICO emphasized on Friday that it has not granted Meta regulatory approval for the initiative and will closely monitor its implementation. The watchdog expects Meta to ensure compliance and transparency about how personal data is being used in its AI training processes.
